Just to keep my resolution...

Just to keep my resolution about blogging regularly, I am entering this rather short and odd posting...
Everything is moving along nicely here in Rome. Tom is working hard and I am doing pretty good (buono) with my language skills.
I no longer - well I shouldn't say  no longer - I seldom us the phrase "Non parlo bene italiano, parla inglese?" (I do not speak good Italian - do you speak English). Now in most all situations I try and use Italian (I am not very good - but I do try). Of course, food ordering and drinks are the easiest. That is where we have had the most practice - heehee.
Other than that - I have started a new project of taking all the photos from 2011 (in Italy) and creating a coffee table book out of them. The up-loading of the photos is taking forever but it should be pretty great when it is finally finished.
The weather here has finally started to cooperate. Our days have started heading into the 60s but the nights are still in the 40s. I shouldn't complain - it will soon enough be in the 90s & 100s - I will miss this weather.
The photo portion of this posting is just going to some random photos taken while I am out and about.
It will be a mix of little cars, graffiti, and Italian quirks...enjoy...
Size comparison...
Tinyist yet!

I think this is a model-kit...
This is a Alfa Romeo Spider 1.6
I got to ride in this one...fun!

Shiny coats...everywhere...
This was a shiny coat family!
Fun with fur...

Yoda & his moped...
Some of the graffitti is real good!

Ok, that is enough silliness for one blog!
Everything else is good - our first guests arrive today (Tom's Cousin Patricia and her husband Brian). Should be a lot of fun.
To end, we hope everybody is well and life is treating exactly as you deserve!
Abbracci a tutti!
Alla prossima! (Till next time)
We wish everybody love and good health!

Adventure day to Sperlonga & Anzio...

Ciao everybody - in previous postings I said I was going to share with y'all our visits to 2 beautiful Italian cities, Vitterbo & Frascati - but yesterday we took a ride to two other beautiful places and I really would like to share them with you. Don'y get me worng - Vitterbo & Frascati are both wonderful ancient walled cities and I will add them as filler into future postings.Since spring (primavera - in Italian) is on its way - we decided to take a day trip to the beach!
Our primary destination was a wonderful town called Sperlonga!
Sperlonga is a beautiful seaside town to the south of Rome. It is filled with Whitewashed houses all clustered on a steep headland. The entire town is built as a bunch of different terraces all leading down to the sea and a magnificent beach. As with all beach towns not in season - it was amazingly peaceful and quiet. Many of the local shops were not open but, of course, we found a wonderful restaurant to have a scrumptious lunch. Since we were at the beach, lunch consisted of fresh seafood, pasta, and a pleasant local white wine.

Insalate di misto mare
(mixed seafood salad)
Vino bianco di casa
(house white wine)

The restaurant was fabulous - our waitress started speaking in Italian to us and we responded in-kind. When we got to ordering the wine - she asked whether we wanted a full carafe or half carafe (in Italian) - I guess by that point she was over our attempt at Italian - without skipping a beat - she quickly repeated her question in English with a perfect New York accent. We responded to her in Italian - she walked away and we had a good laugh about it... We would like to thank Ristorante Corallo for a wonderful dining experience. The best part of the resaurant was its location (the street and the view)...
Beyond the lovely sleepy little town - there was the view. Not much I can say - so I will let the view speak for itself...
Tom & the coastline...
Ron & the city...

Great city on a hill...
and a Quiet beachline....

An amazing little place for rent...
& fresh fish daily!

After leaving Sperlonga, Tom & I decided that we needed to come back for a weekend when the weather gets better. So, today we booked a great little hotel for Easter weekend!
On the way home we wanted to drive back along the coast and started heading north...
For sunset we ended up in a little town called Anzio. A cute coastal town during WWII used as a crucial Allied landing zone. It has a major historical significance and is the home of two very important war cemetaries.
I must say the sunset was just darling...take a look...

While in town on the way back from sunset, Tom stopped at a local barber (Antonio) to get his hair cut. We walked back through the town and decided that it was time to head home - the sun was down and we still had about an hour drive until we were home.
All-in-all it was a beautiful day! The weather was amazing - not too cold - not too hot!
Good food, great places, amazing company - what more can someone ask for!

So, for this adventure day - we are signing off -
Until the next posting, we send our love to everybody!
Abbracci a tutti!

A Christmas Dream come true... (and tasty too)...

I know talking about Christmas presents is a little late but I definitely wanted to talk about this present!
For Christmas Tom gave me (us) a 3 day cooking class here in Rome!
It was with a wonderful British lady who has lived and cooked here in Rome for over 40 years.
Her name is Diane Seed and the school is the Italian Gourmet (click the link to see her website).
Diane is kind-of hard to describe in words...
She is sort-of a British Julia Child with a great sense of humor and a million intriguing stories to tell. She has had an amaingly interesting and exciting life... Diane has written numerious books on Italian and International cooking. She also teaches a number of cooking classes throughout the year in different places around the world. She is presently in India doing a cooking class with her Grandson (as her assistant).
The whole experience was amazing!
The classes in Rome are held in her apartment in the Doria Pamphili palace at Piazza Venezia. The view from the apartment is spectactular - you look directly out on the Vittorio Emanuele (the Wedding Cake as it's phrased) and you get a beautiful view of the Colosseo! Take a look...

We started our Adventure on Friday night -
We headed over Diane's apartment in the evening. We cooked, we had a lovely glass on wine, we eat some delicious noshy food and we discussed what we were going to do for the remainder of the weekend. She informed us that on Saturday we were going to joined by a lovely lady, Carla, who wished to do the class for 1 day while she was in Rome. After discussing the amazing food that we would be preparing over the weekend...we went home to get rest and be ready for the next day.
On Saturday we met at Campo de' Fiori - daily this piazza host many local merchants selling everything from fresh vegetables and local spices to sweaters and housewares. The market opens early in the morning and closes by 2pm daily.
Local Farm stand...

Carla, Tom and Diane - after our shopping spree...

We met up at 9:30 in the morning to see and shop for the wonders of food that awaited us.
Diane explained that the shops around the markets usually carry the best and freshest bread, cheese, meat and fish... We stop in at, purchased from and sampled many wonderful local goods.
  • The bakery was our first stop...it was packed - the main shop is pretty small and the 'forno' (oven) area was exposed through big glass doors - so we watched the 'panettieri' (bakers) making wonderful pizza bianco (simple pizza dough flat bread - amazingly popular here in Rome).
  • Because we just started our day and we already shopped at one store - it was time to take a break and have caffe (coffee or cappucino). It was just the pick-me-up needed to continue our shopping extravaganza!
  • Next we walked the market for fresh produce and spices. Diane entertainingly explained what to look for and how to shop with the local vendors. I must say it was a 'very Italian' experience. We picked up fresh tomatoes, zucchini, eggplants, lemons, and lovely herbs.
  • Lastly, we stopped into the cheese store, the cured meat store, and at the fish-monger. Samples were plentiful but the bags were starting to get heavy - so back to the apartment for some cooking!
When we got back to the apartment - an Asian man was waiting for us. His English was not great but he wanted to join our group for the day. Diane explained to him that we only had purchased enough food for us for that day - she asked if he would like to come back to join us on Sunday. He agreed and on Sunday we were joined by Achi ('Ah-chee'). Again we had a great time - but I must say they were long days and when Tom and I returned home we were beat!

Here is a little sample of our days...
Once back at the apartment it was time for aprons, prep, and cooking!
  Tom all Aproned out...
  Ron too...

We all had our stations and were all given jobs to do...leading to an amazing lunch!
We were joined by Diane's Grandson Alex - but he too had to work for his meal!
Carla & Tom prepping...
Ron, Carla, Alex & Diane...

Now, let's get to the menu (for both Saturday and Sunday):
  • Lemon-flavoured Meatballs (Polpettine)
  • A Fresh Tomato Sauce
  • Linguine with tuna, lemon & rocket (Linguine al tonno, limone e rughetta)
  • Osso Buco
  • Yeast Fritters with pizza flavouring (Pettole alla pizzaiola)
  • Zucchini Risotto (Risotto di courgette)
  • Tagliatelle with Bolognese Sauce (Tagliatelle alla Bolognese)
  • Seabass in "mad water" (Spigola in Acqua Pazza)
  • Chicken with Black Olives (Pollo con le Olive)
  • Tagliolini with Smoked Salmon (Tagliolini al Salmone)
  • Eggplant Timbales with Tomato & Basil Sauce (Sformatino di Melanzane)
  • Spaghetti with artichokes (Spagetti al carciofo)
  • Ricotta fritter (Frittelle di ricotta)
  • And some wonderful Local Wines!
I know it sounds like a lot but it's pretty standard for Italian meals! It is the menu for 2 days!
Everything was delicious and the little insights passed along by Diane were invaluable!

As a follow-up to our cooking class we had such a wonderful time with Diane. We invited her over for Cosmos (one of her favorite drinks - but hard to find in Italy). She came over on a Friday evening and we eat, drank, and swapped stories even more! After the evening she was kind enough to invite over her place next time. Not the apartment in Rome but a little place she has outside Rome - it is the guest quarters on the property of a Barons Palace... Wow - what fun that will be!

We will definitely keep in touch with Diane and wish her a safe and happy trip to India!

On the Homefront -
  • The snow is melting but we are expecting more snow this weekend.
  • Our first Guests for 2012 arrive at the end of this month - let the fun begin!
  • Italian lessons are going well - I understand when people talk to me but still have an issue responding properly in Italian (very self-conscious).
  • The Expats group is still a lot of fun - and the people we meet are all very kind.
Ron, Fabio, Sandra & Robert!
For this posting I am going to sign off!
I would like to wish my brother Gene a Buon Compleanno (Happy Birthday) on the 11th!

As always - we want to send our love and best thoughts to all!
Abbracci a tutti!

A Special Weather Posting - Snow in Rome!

We interupt our regularly schedule posting for this Special Weather Posting!
Well, Yes, it does follow Tom & I!
It has snowed here in Rome!
This storm brought 10-13cm (3-5 inches)
Last snow in Rome was in 2005. There was just a dusting of snow.
The last accumulation happened in 1986. At that time there was 20cm of snow that paralysed the city...

This snow (called 'neve' here) did a great job of crippling the city too!
Since this is hopefully a once in a lifetime experience - I needed to grab the camera and go out!
The snow accumulated very quickly and at times the flakes (the snow - not the people) were as large as limes. I decided to hop a bus down to the Colosseo to take pictures. Normally, this trip would take about 15 minutes. This time, in total this trip took me over 2 hours. The roads were a mess and everybody was trying to get somewhere...at the same time they were taking pictures of this amazing event and talking on their phones. Mopeds were crashing in the streets, cars were sliding into other cars and buses were fish-tailing all over the place. Since snow is not common here in Rome - I found it funny that they had workers out spreading sand on the road by hand - when I say by hand - I mean by handfuls, individual handfuls...
Scooter being picked up & moved...
Via Veneto...
We moved one block in 20 minutes. Finally, we got about half-way there, the bus stopped and the doors opened. The driver told us that service was being suspended and we all needed to get off. Luckily, we were near Piazza Barberini and a local Metro stop. I hopped the Metro down to the Colosseo - it was packed. You didn't even need to hold a handrail - the pure amount of people kept you in place. Finally, down at the Colosseo and it was wonderful...
The snow was falling, the people were in shock and the pictures were great!

The Colosseo
Arche of Constantine

I Metro'd back up to our neck of the woods and decided to take a walk through the Villa Borghese - I knew the snow and the trees would look wonderful...and they were...
Let it snow...
Let it snow...
Let it snow!

Overnight we had even more snow...we woke up to a good 6 inches on the terrace...

Since the snow outside and we had nothing better to do - the logical next step was to...
Make..
...A...
...Snowman!

After having a little fun we decided to go out for a walk and meet some friends for lunch...
The Spanish Steps
Largo Argentina (where Caesar was killed)

After a wonderful lunch and a nice walk home - the sun was setting on our little storm...

Finally, I found some local news photos of some of the places we never got to - I hope you enjoy!
St Peter's from above...
St. Peter's lit at night...

Nuns playing at St. Peter's...
Trevi Fountain at night...

Aftermath...
Lots of stores closed, schools off on Monday, and downed trees being cleaned up!

We now return you to your regularly scheduled blog...
Next on the agenda - Cooking with Diane Seed!
Love to all...abbracci a tutti!
And enjoy your warm weather!
